Busy Room 13 kids!

Here are just a few things we have been up to:
We have a new inquiry topic. It is the study of history and we are looking at 'Early School Days. Next term we are going to extend our learning when we visit the Early settlers museum in Dunedin.
Last week we got arty and made some amazing taniwha pictures and masks about the Saddle Hill Taniwha story.
Today and tomorrow we are presenting poems to the class. Miss Brown will be choosing some children to do their poems in front of the junior school and a special judge this Wednesday.
We learnt about the value manaakitanga for Maori language week. Manaakitanga means how we make people feel welcome and show visitors respect.

Hello -It's Term 2!

We have been learning about retelling stories.......You need to read the book a lot of times to get to know the story without looking at it. Then you say who the characters are, where the story takes place(setting),tell what happens at the start, middle and the end of the story. Try to change your voice and use actions!!!

On Friday 10th of June, Room 13 are organising assembly. We are using the song Bad Hair Day as our theme. Come along and see all the cool work we have been doing this term.

Here are some photos of us learning about Golf.

Nate's solar oven

Scientists in action!

The home learning has been fantastic. There have been some super science experiments. Check out Nate's solar oven. It was so hot on Thursday it melted the cheese.
In reading, we are learning to read fluently and with expression. This group tried very hard when Miss Brown recorded them. Listen, Can you hear their expression?

Odds and Evens

We have been doing maths stations to warm up our brains for maths. We found out that when you add an even and an odd you get an odd number. When you add two even numbers you get an even number. Finally when you add two odd numbers you always get an even number. Check out our photos of our ordering numbers stations.
Max talked to us about magnets. A magnet has 2 poles a south and a north. Thanks Max for the cool experiment.

What is energy?

Annabel and Oscar shared some exciting news on What is Energy?
Annabel and her family built a water wheel. We tried it out and thought it was awesome.
We learnt that a water wheel is a hydropower system. It makes power from the flow of water. It is made up of a large wheel. The wheel is made of wood or of metal.

Oscar and Miss Brown made a lemon battery. We found it worked with just two lemons. When we added extra lemons the LED became brighter. The acid from the lemon makes chemical energy and then it is turned into electrical energy.
Oscar watched this Youtube video at home with his Dad. It is where he got the idea. Thank you to Oscar's family for supplying us with the equipment we needed.

Scientists

We are learning about what is energy??? These are the key understandings:
Energy makes things happen by generating forces that do different types of work.

Energy can change its form e.g. electrical energy changes into light energy when it travels through a bulb.

Physics (The study of energy) affects our everyday life.

Here are some photos of the great home learning we have been doing on What is energy?
Liam talked about what car batteries do. Tim told us about conductors and insulators. He told us that: A conductor lets electric current flow through it.
An insulator does not let an electric current flow through it. Holly showed us her phone, it needs batteries to work too!!!!
